Bay Film Series Announces Partial Winter 2018 Schedule
It’s time once again to CELEBRATE THE OSCARS! The Bay Film Series always shows the best in international, documentary, independent and local film. Last year, we had an incredible roster of award-winning, critically-acclaimed, audience-applauded movies.
This year, our hope is to repeat that success. “But the film industry is different this year,” says Film Series coordinator Nanci Love. “Scandals in the industry have knocked some of the expected titles out of contention. Plus, video streaming has affected the availability of documentaries and many international titles.”
“Last year, we had a number of clear ‘front runners’ for the Oscar race, but this year is still very much up in the air, with a score of movies being mentioned in ‘Oscar buzz.’ A number of studios are holding back availability till they know which are appearing on nomination lists.”
Thus, only two films are scheduled so far.
On February 1st, the Film Series will show THE FLORIDA PROJECT. “The Florida Project tells the story of a precocious six year-old and her ragtag group of friends whose summer break is filled with childhood wonder, possibility and a sense of adventure while the adults around them struggle with hard times,” says the published synopsis. But critics and audiences are raving about this film. The Minneapolis Star Tribune says, “It doesn't just show what its characters go through, it observes. It notices. It studies. This is a film that pays attention to the little details that communicate huge feelings.” The Detroit News concurs: “It's one of the most effective, honest portraits of childhood you'll ever see, and a touching, poignant snapshot of American life in 2017.”
Film Series titles for March and April will be announced soon.
All Film Series movies are shown in the Besse Center Theater at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 and are available at the box office or can be purchased online.
